Frequently Asked Questions about ESL/Linguistics 12:
Approaches to University Writing for Multilingual Students

What is Linguistics 12?

This course is designed to help multilingual writers develop critical reading, thinking and academic writing proficiency. It is a 40-hour, 4-unit course with the same curricular requirements as Writing 1 in the Writing Program. It fulfills the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR).

How is Linguistics 12 different from Writing 1?

Linguistics 12 offers specialized writing instruction for bilingual or multilingual students whose home language is other than English. In addition to critical reading and writing from sources, students will work on developing academic vocabulary and writing fluency; they will also develop editing strategies to diagnose and correct language errors to improve accuracy in their writing.

Do I get degree credit for Linguistics 12?

Yes, you receive the same degree credit as that for Writing 1 towards your baccalaureate degree.

May I take Linguistics 12 Pass/No pass?

No, like Writing 1, Linguistics 12 may only be taken for a letter grade.

What grade do I need to pass Linguistics 12?

As with Writing 1, students must receive a C or better grade to pass the course. Students who receive C- or below must repeat the course to fulfill the Entry Level Writing Requirement.

Is there a final exam for Linguistics 12 as in Writing 1?

Yes, all Linguistics 12 students must take same final writing examination as students in Writing 1.

If I pass Linguistics 12, can I then take Writing 2?

Yes.

How do students get placed into Linguistics 12?

Students may placed into Linguistics 12 in three ways:

1. Placement may be made on the basis of a student's performance on the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE) . In scoring this exam, faculty readers indicate whether an essay suggests that the writer could benefit from specialized instruction for multilingual students.

P> 2. For those students who take Linguistics 3 at UCSB, Linguistics 12 may be a placement determined by the portfolio assessment at the end of the quarter.

3. For international undergraduate students, this placement may be made on the basis of performance on UCSB's English Language Placement Exam (ELPE).

What happens if I have a course conflict with the time that Linguistics 12 is offered. May I enroll in Writing 1 instead?

Students who are placed into Linguistics 12 but who have a course conflict can take Writing 1 and Linguistics 11. They may not take Writing 1 without Linguistics 11 if given a Linguistics 12 placement.

What is Linguistics 11?

Linguistics 11 is a course that was designed to be taken concurrently with Writing 1 to help students improve writing fluency, accuracy and academic vocabulary. It is a three-unit course, and at this time it is offered only for workload credit, not degree credit. It is graded Pass/No Pass only.

What if I have course conflicts with both Linguistics 12 and Linguistics 11? May I enroll in Writing 1 instead?

No, you will need to satisfy the requirement either by taking Linguistics 12 or by taking Linguistics 11 along with Writing 1.

If I choose the Writing 1 + Linguistics 11 option to satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement, may I take Linguistics 11 first, before I take Writing 1?

Yes, you may take Linguistics 11 during a quarter prior to enrolling in Writing 1, but not Writing 1 first and Linguistics 11 afterwards.

Is Linguistics 12 offered in summer school?

Linguistics 12 will not be offered in Summer, 2006, but may be offered in subsequent years.

What if I want to take Writing 1 in the summer?

If you have a Linguistics 12 placement but want to take Writing 1 in the summer, you should take Linguistics 11 first to be eligible for enrollment in Writing 1.

If I get a Writing 1 placement instead of a Linguistics 12 placement, could I enroll in Linguistics 12?

Yes, with permission from the instructor of the course. Students are also welcome to enroll in Linguistics 11 without a requirement (that is, as an elective) if they wish.

What if I have some other problem about my placement in Linguistics 12? Who should I contact?

You should first contact the ESL Program Assistant, Michelle Lee (mlee@linguistics.ucsb.edu), Telephone: 893-7258, Office: South Hall 3507). If she cannot help you, she will refer your problem to the Director of ESL, Dr. Jan Frodesen.
